Cyclists participating in the "Gold Star 500" ride will be passing through the 110th District on September 25, 2024. Representative Blaine Wilhour is encouraging residents to support the cyclists and their cause, which honors Gold Star Families.
The event, known as the Gold Star 500, began on September 24, 2024. Cyclists embarked on a 500-mile journey that includes stops in Metropolis, Mt Vernon, Mattoon, Bloomington, Princeton, and Rockford. This annual event aims to preserve the legacy of Illinois military service members who have died in service to the nation.
"This is their eighth annual event which works to preserve the legacy and honor of those military service men and service women from Illinois who have made the ultimate sacrifice in support of service to this great nation," stated Rep. Wilhour.
Participants can choose between a five-day ride covering approximately 500 miles or opt for shorter one-day or three-day rides. Proceeds from these events fund scholarships and create Fallen Hero History Project Videos that honor fallen military members' lives.
The funds raised come from event registration fees, fundraising efforts, and donations. These contributions help keep alive the names and stories of fallen military service members.
