Chinese Supreme Court Justice Zhai plans to address the EIU student body tonight.
Justice Jingmin Zhai, who is vice president of Beijing, China’s Supreme Court, is scheduled to visit Eastern Illinois University at 7 p.m. today, April 11, to speak at the university’s Lumpkin Hall in Charleston.
With an interpreter in attendance, Zhai will address an audience and answer questions about China’s judicial system. Following the free event there will be an 8:30 p.m. reception, where attendees can personally greet the Justice and additional guests.
Dean Vikram Amar of the University of Illinois’ College of Law, who organized the speaking engagement, is also hosting Zhai during his stay. The event is mutually supported by EIU’s Asian Heritage Month Committee, Pre-Law Society and the Public Policy Institute.
He has spent close to 30 years serving on Beijing’s Supreme Court, the highest of three levels of courts in the city’s jurisdiction.
With Beijing comprising a population of 20 million people, Zhai has heard criminal and civil cases in a wide range of areas, focusing mainly on intellectual property, corruption and appellate jurisdiction.
Zhai previously visited Illinois in 2004 as a visiting scholar to the University of Illinois’ law school.
Lumpkin Hall Auditorium is located at 600 Lincoln Ave., Charleston. All members of the public, along with university community denizens, are invited to attend.
