From cryptography to capstones, Eastern Illinois University's (EIU) Council on Graduate Studies met Feb. 2 in Blair Hall at EIU's Charleston campus to authorize curriculum changes and approve a variety of new courses.
Executive actions involved altering certain course prefixes so that all geology and geography courses converted to the single prefix of “GEO”; lowering the number of allowable credit hours for THA 5990; changing schedules for four art courses; and one additional prefix change, affecting cryptography, algorithms, computation and operating systems course names by converting “MAT” to “CSM.”
Three cybersecurity courses were added to the curriculum. A new interdisciplinary media history and media archeology course offered by Ed Wehrle was also approved, as was a new biology course proposed by Karen Gaines. Marshall Lassak will offer a new course in curriculum and assessment in mathematics education, in addition to one math education program revision.
Jeff Ashley’s proposed revisions for six items include a political science research course, a research methods course, two political science public planning courses, public policy research and analysis, and a class on Congress and the presidency. In addition, Ashley was authorized to offer two new seminars — on American politics and public administration — and one new capstone project, with an applied political science approach.
In other business, five separate sets of minutes were approved. Finally, the dean reported an update on spring enrollment workshops, prior to adjournment at 3:22 p.m.
