Milton Township in Illinois is currently the subject of criminal investigations. The township denied parts of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, citing an exemption that applies to ongoing criminal investigations. According to the township, certain records could not be disclosed because they relate to these investigations.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney, along with the Illinois Secretary of State and the Secretary of State Police, are involved in examining the matter. A spokesperson for the Secretary of State’s office confirmed: “The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is aware of the situation and its Department of Police is actively investigating the matter in conjunction with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.”

The denied FOIA requests sought information about a contract between Milton Township and the Distracted Driver Safety Program (DDSP). The DDSP was reportedly carrying out traffic enforcement operations on behalf of Milton Township, which resulted in financial benefits for both parties.

Edgar County Watchdogs raised concerns about whether townships like Milton can legally claim exemptions intended only for agencies with authority to conduct criminal investigations. They argue that townships do not have such powers under state law.

A detailed review regarding this contract will be published by Edgar County Watchdogs at a later date.
