Nathan P. Sweeney has been found guilty in DeKalb County Circuit Court of aggravated DUI resulting in the death of a DeKalb County Deputy Sheriff. Sentencing for Sweeney is set to take place later this month.

At the time of the incident, Sweeney held a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Investigations have looked into allegations that Kane County may have masked prior convictions related to his CDL status. The Illinois Secretary of State addressed these concerns in a letter to the United States Department of Transportation, stating, “His CDL would have been disqualified for life,” and called for an investigation into Kane County’s handling of Sweeney’s previous convictions as a CDL holder.

Kane County acknowledged errors in its process regarding Sweeney’s earlier conviction(s), admitting that “mistakes were made” which allowed him to retain his CDL.

Further updates will be provided after sentencing.
