State Representative Chris Miller of Illinois is actively advocating for the rights of parents to choose their children's educational paths. The "Homeschool Act," or HB 2827, recently passed through committee despite significant opposition from families opting for home or private schooling. This bill mandates annual registration with the Illinois State Board of Education for non-public schools and requires homeschools to submit a Homeschool Declaration Form, with potential penalties including fines and imprisonment. It also obliges administrators to provide personal information about themselves and their students to authorities.

Rep. Miller expressed his concerns, stating, “I’m a proud father of seven homeschooled children and this bill is a direct attack on families in Illinois who believe that they should be allowed to homeschool their children without mandates.” He further criticized those supporting the bill, saying, “The radical legislators who want this bill passed are angry to see homeschool students thrive.”

Public opposition has been strong, with over 48,000 residents filing witness slips against HB 2827. Many gathered at the State Capitol to voice their experiences with homeschooling. Rep. Miller urged parents to resist what he describes as an infringement on freedoms: “We don’t need any more mandates from Democrats that strip freedoms away from Illinoisans... Democrats know that more families are choosing to homeschool their children, and they’re trying to regain power and enforce more mandates on responsible parents.”

The Education Policy Committee reviewed HB 2827 today; despite unanimous Republican opposition, it advanced and will now proceed to the House Floor for a vote. Those opposed can sign a petition and file a witness slip at ilga.gov.

Representative Chris Miller represents Illinois’ 101st House District, covering parts of Coles County along with portions of Champaign, Douglas, and Vermilion Counties along the I-57 corridor.
