The Illinois House of Representatives has passed the state budget for fiscal year 2026, which amounts to $55.2 billion, an increase of nearly $2 billion from the previous year. The decision was made despite unanimous opposition from Republican members.
State Representative Chris Miller (R-Hindsboro) criticized the budget, describing it as filled with unnecessary tax increases and excessive spending on non-governmental organizations and projects favoring Democratic districts. "This budget is far from balanced, and it’s packed with tax hikes, excessive spending on NGOs and more pork projects for Democrats," Miller stated.
Miller expressed concerns about the lack of transparency in the budgeting process, noting that progressive Democrats negotiated spending plans without Republican input. He further criticized what he described as a reward system for politicians through pay raises amidst increased taxes and funding allocations that favor Democratic areas.
"The citizens of Illinois are fed up with radical policies, being taxed to death, funding illegal immigrants, and they are voting with their feet," Miller added. He attributed blame to Democrats for policies he believes have raised living costs and hindered economic opportunities in Illinois.
