State Representative Adam Niemerg announced the results of the Illinois state flag redesign contest, revealing that voters prefer to retain the current flag. The contest included ten new designs and two former designs, but "the public has spoken with a loud voice that they overwhelmingly want to keep our current Illinois State Flag," said Rep. Niemerg.
The voting process lasted five weeks and saw nearly 385,000 votes cast. Of these, over 165,000 votes, or 43 percent, favored keeping the existing flag. This number surpassed the combined total of votes for the next five top designs.
The Illinois Flag Commission is tasked with submitting a report on its findings and recommendations to the state's General Assembly by April 1. Following this report, lawmakers will decide whether to adopt a new design, revert to a previous one, or maintain the current flag.
