State Representative Adam Niemerg has announced that the Martinsville Fire Department has been awarded a $26,000 grant from the Office of State Fire Marshal. This funding is designated for the purchase of safety equipment, which can include personal protective equipment, communications technology, and fire personnel training.

Representative Niemerg expressed his support for the grant: “I congratulate Chief Davidson on receiving this grant and know how much these dollars can help our rural communities,” he said. He also encouraged other fire departments and ambulance services to explore similar programs and grants to enhance their preparedness in aiding families, farms, and businesses.

Additionally, Niemerg highlighted that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications for Volunteer Fire Assistance grants until April 14. These grants are aimed at supporting local fire departments and training academies in preventing and suppressing rural fires. The funds cover up to 50% of project costs with a maximum of $10,000 per department.

Projects previously funded by these grants have included radios, hoses, SCBA gear, wildland PPE, hand tools, chainsaws, backpack blowers, modifying federal excess vehicles and equipment. For more information about applying for these grants or eligible projects, interested parties can contact Forestry’s Wildland Fire Program Manager at 217-782-8774 or visit the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website.
