Access to timely and effective cardiac care proved crucial for Jason Cook, a police officer at Eastern Illinois University, when he experienced severe pain during his workday. Cook drove himself to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Emergency Department after feeling intense pain from his lower abdomen to his left shoulder.
Upon arrival, medical staff noted Cook's high blood pressure and called in cardiologist Dr. Michael LaMonto. A stress test and cardiac ultrasound indicated potential issues, prompting a CT scan that revealed a significant blockage in Cook's left anterior descending artery (LAD), often referred to as the 'widow maker' due to its dangerous nature.
Cook was surprised by the diagnosis, having not experienced typical warning signs of heart problems. He had attributed occasional shortness of breath over the years to lingering effects from multiple COVID-19 infections. "I usually just needed to pause briefly, and I’d catch my breath and be fine," he said.
Dr. LaMonto monitored Cook over a weekend while medication slightly lowered his blood pressure but wasn't sufficient for long-term stability. The decision was made to insert two stents into Cook's artery. Although apprehensive about undergoing such a procedure for the first time, especially one involving his heart, Cook trusted in the expertise of SBL Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Dean Katsamakis.
The procedure was successful with no complications, much to Cook's relief. Expressing gratitude towards Drs. LaMonto and Katsamakis, he remarked, “I truly think that Dr. LaMonto and Dr. Katsamakis saved my life.”
Following this experience, Cook has embraced life anew as an active member of both his church community and family life while appreciating everyday moments more deeply. He has enrolled in cardiac rehabilitation at SBL which has helped him regain stamina for activities like climbing stairs or mowing the lawn without difficulty.
“The world is out there,” he stated about his future outlook on maintaining health for himself and his loved ones.
