A federal civil rights lawsuit has been initiated in the Central District of Illinois. The lawsuit names Tad Mayhall, in his individual capacity, and Shelby County as defendants. The suit alleges violations of the federal civil rights of John Kraft.

Attorney Robert T. Hanlon, representing John Kraft, issued a statement regarding the lawsuit: "The action by Mr. Kraft against Shelby County and Tad Mayhall stems from a gross violation of Mr. Kraft’s rights in which he was unlawfully removed from a public meeting and was denied any due process as to his removal. The lack of equity is readily visible from the video taken by Shelby County."
