World War II veteran and Urbana firefighter Jim Kelly, Sr. was commemorated in the Illinois House during the Veto Session. He was honored for his lifelong dedication to both his country and community through House Resolution 873, presented by Representative Brad Halbrook.
Jim Kelly completed his education at Urbana High School and was employed by the P & E Railroad Company when World War II commenced for the United States. Initially unable to enlist due to his job being classified as "essential," he eventually received a release from the railroad company and joined the Marine Corps. He participated in the entire 36-day battle of Iwo Jima.
"Jim Kelly gave his entire life to public service for his country, and for his local community. We were honored to recognize his courage. He has set an amazing example for future generations," said Rep. Halbrook.
Rep. Halbrook also shared anecdotes from Kelly's family: "Jim’s family told me that some of his fondest memories were caddying for Horton Smith, the first Master’s Champion, and getting a beer from his favorite actor, John Wayne," adding that "his was a life well-lived, and honor well-deserved."
