One of the highlights of life in Illinois is the variety of County Fairs held from June through October across the state. These fairs, numbering over 100, provide enjoyable experiences for families. Most take place during the summer months.
In the 101st District, the Coles County Fair will begin on July 27th in Charleston. This fair has been a tradition since its establishment in 1854 and is a significant event for families in Charleston and beyond.
The Knox County Fair holds the title of being the longest continuously running fair in Illinois. Events at this fair include harness races, stock car races, tractor and truck pulls, figure 8 racing, demolition derbies, and a 4-H show. Attendees can also enjoy various food options, carnival rides, and other attractions. The Knox County Fair dates back to 1851 when it was initially known as the Knoxville Fair.
County Fairs are not only unique gathering places but also serve as homecomings for those who have moved away. They offer entertainment suitable for all ages and are an affordable option compared to other forms of entertainment.
Competitions at these fairs allow families to showcase their skills in agriculture, gardening, livestock management, cooking, and baking. Children and teenagers prepare diligently for these events, which teach them dedication and hard work while boosting their confidence.
These fairs remind everyone of history and simpler times. They bring history and tradition to life each year while allowing communities to express pride and accomplishment annually.
