During the DeWitt County board meeting on May 23, 2024, it was announced that Chairman Dan Matthews has withdrawn from the upcoming November election. This decision follows ongoing criminal investigations by the Illinois State Police and a controversial sale of the marina at Clinton Lake.

A special county meeting last month approved a contract for selling the county-owned marina and a short-term lease. There are still many unanswered questions regarding this transaction, as indicated by audio from the previous meeting. The local newspaper has also provided commentary and recordings of this meeting.

Numerous Freedom of Information Act requests have been submitted to obtain key records related to these matters. The first concern is whether the special meeting adhered to publication requirements outlined in the county's code, which supplement Open Meetings Act requirements. Verification awaits the return of FOIA requests.

Requests have been made for copies of all bids and criteria used to determine the highest responsible bidder since it is understood there were higher bids than the one accepted.

The Illinois State Police have questioned individuals concerning marina operations, which are now part of their investigation. It is reported that those operating the marina did not provide required financial information to auditors, prompting requests for audit records related to the marina.

Further updates will be provided once requested records are received.
