Michael Lowery, a teacher currently with the Martinsville School District in Illinois, was arrested on allegations of criminal sexual assault. The arrest, which took place in Edgar County, has led to Lowery being detained without bail. The court noted that releasing Lowery would not mitigate the "real and present threat to a specific person and community."

The charges include three counts of criminal sexual assault/supervisory involving a victim between the ages of 13 and 17, identified as Class 1 felonies. The next court hearing is set for April 21, 2025.

The Martinsville School District addressed the situation with a statement from Superintendent Robert Waggoner. In his message to parents, Waggoner said, "We learned today that Michael Lowery was arraigned on criminal charges related to 'criminal sexual assault/authority.' Law Enforcement has shared that, at this time, there is no information suggesting that any current or former Martinsville students or other staff members are involved in this matter." He emphasized the district's cooperation with law enforcement and assured parents that the safety of students remains a priority.

To maintain a secure educational environment, the district performs thorough background checks, including fingerprinting and registry checks, as part of its hiring process. Additionally, all staff are required to follow district policies and undergo training on ethics and appropriate conduct.

Parents are encouraged to discuss the matter with their children, especially if they had regular contact with Lowery. The school has made counselors available for support as needed. Waggoner advised that any specific information or concerns be directed to him or the sheriff's office.

The investigation is ongoing, and the district will keep monitoring the situation. No further comments were made regarding the law enforcement proceedings.
