The end of the school year is near, and soon our youth will be enjoying a long summer break. Prom was a big success, and now it’s time for awards, graduation, summer plans, and our High School seniors to prepare for college or a career.
We’re excited for many who have been accepted to an institute of higher learning. Still, sadly some will be packing bags and leaving us to live on campuses around the country. Some will play sports for colleges and universities. Some will play instruments in marching bands. All of them will study hard and learn a lot. Others will choose to take a job, learn a trade, or start their own enterprise. No matter where they go, what they choose to study, or what path they take in life, we are proud of our graduates. They will always be Lions to us.
But what to do this summer?
Athletic Camps
Well, for the more athletically inclined, summer athletic camps offer fun and education in golf, volleyball, and basketball. Community Pool
Of course, there is always something happening at the town pool. Public and private swim lessons will be available. Water aerobics will be scheduled, which is a great way to exercise with less stress, great for our seniors and anyone looking to get into shape this summer. You don’t need to sign up in advance. Just drop in for only $5 per class.

Of course, our local parks offer so much to do during the summer, from boating to hiking to swimming. Enjoy a Stay-cation and camp out overnight or on the weekend for a getaway that doesn’t cost a ton of gas money to get there.
City Band Concerts / Farmer’s Market
One of Marshall’s favorite past times gears up as we get close to summer, our Friday night concerts downtown. From June 3 to August 12, the Marshall City Band will regal us with music under the stars every Friday night. Friday nights are big fun in Marshall all summer as the Marshall Farmers Market also starts on June 3. The market will be open from 4 pm-7:30 pm in downtown Marshall. The vendors will be set up around the courthouse square every Friday night during the summer months. Come to the market, do your shopping, maybe get the fixings for an evening picnic, and set yourself and the family up to stay for the music of the Marshall City Band. The Lion’s Club antique popcorn wagon will be there, so leave room for some freshly popped popcorn!
The market is still taking applications to be a vendor. You can learn what the parameters are and apply to sell your wares on these busy and active Friday nights. There is still time to apply to host an ice cream social or sell refreshments at a Friday night band concert. If you have an organization that would benefit from being at the concerts to raise funds and awareness of what your organization does or what you offer, contact the Clark County Sheriff’s office to reserve your spot.
Marshall Area Youth Network (MAYN)
Speaking of great organizations, one more enjoyable activity is planned for June 3 to benefit one of Marshall’s non-profits, the Marshall Area Youth Network (wow, what a night to be in Marshall, Illinois).
At 7:30 pm on June 3, Marshall will be holding, The Great Ball Race right downtown. A dump truck filled with the balls will be released to “race” downhill. You can purchase a ball to enter the race for $5 or get five balls for $20. The ball that wins the race will garner a prize of $1000 for the lucky person who owns it. The second-place winner gets $250, and third place gets $100. All proceeds go to our fantastic Marshall Area Youth Network. This organization helps our youth in many ways, offering mentoring and assistance to strengthen our schools and local families.
