Parents of babies and toddlers often talk about “childproofing” a home, but statistics tell us that home safety is not just a matter for parents of small children and instead is something we all should consider -- perhaps especially those in the senior population. This presentation will focus on the particular dangers that unsecured firearms and prescription medications pose in the homes of seniors, where both grandchildren and those struggling with dementia or other issues visit and live. Following this, we will detail the importance of safe storage of medication and firearms for seniors and give practical tips on how both can be secured. This presentation draws on material from Veterans’ Affairs, from Doctors for America, and from the public education Be SMART campaign (the last focuses on the importance of safe storage of firearms in homes where children are present).
