HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital issued the following announcement on Aug. 3.
According to the National Center of Disease Control and Prevention, close to two million people are treated for injuries from slips or falls annually in emergency departments in the U.S. HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital wants to help prevent fractures and avoidable injuries with an educational seminar.
Please join us for valuable information and simple strategies designed to educate and promote fall and fracture prevention. The No Falls this Autumn seminar will be will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, August 9 in Classroom B of the hospital, located at 200 S. Cedar St., Shelbyville. The seminar is free, no registration is required and the public is invited to attend.
Tonya Bowrey, manager of rehabilitation services, will talk about the importance of balance and simple measures one can take to lower the risks of falls or fractures. She will also cover changes as one ages. A special guest will tell her story via video after her long recovery from two broken femurs.
Occupational therapist Teri Whalen will lead a demonstration in golden yoga. For those interested, the hospital will provide a tour of the new renovations and answer questions about the newly remodeled area.
In addition to the informative presentations and the motivating storytelling on these topics, there will be a gift for each person in attendance. Healthy treats will be available will be served at and attendees will have a chance to win a special door prize.
