Free food for famished families, along with infrastructure updates, topped the list for the Lawrenceville, Illinois City Council as it gathered for its recent regular.

Mayor Don Wagner called the meeting to order. After that, the council approved minutes from its Dec. 10 meeting and a motion to pay December 2015 bills.

Mayor Wagner reported that the city budget and all departments are currently under budget; Leslie Ann Howder was sworn in as new council member.

In old business, the council discussed and approved a motion to give advance notice of IDH workers needed; and on the Liquor Commission’s recommendation, decided not to grant a sixth Class A liquor license to a local spirits business.

Birgit Volk’s request regarding a supplementary food program, Fish & Loaves, was next on the agenda. The initiative to supplement meals for children with “meal insecurities over the weekends” is a planned countywide attempt to help families and has garnered Mayor Wagner’s support. The council voted to grant $1,500 to the program.

A similar program suggested by Volk involving underserved veterans traveling in the area, to offer backpacks equipped with goods and supplies, was granted a $500 stipend.

IDC representative Courtney Yost reported on community projects, and Mayor Wagner reminded attendees that the city has provided for an IDC stipend of $2,500.

The Mayor listed aloud facilities in need of help with essentials such as food and clothing, and reported on ongoing road, water tower and other infrastructure improvements.

The meeting was then adjourned.
