Illinois State Representative Chris Miller has criticized Illinois’ sanctuary state policies, claiming they have left families vulnerable and allowed violent offenders to remain free. Miller stated that these issues are not isolated incidents but are the result of “failed leadership and reckless policies that put politics ahead of public safety.” He called for state leaders to allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to do their jobs.

Miller cited several recent cases as examples. In January 2025, Katie Abraham and Chloe Polzin were killed in a hit-and-run crash by Julio Cucul-Bol, who was in the country illegally and attempted to flee after the incident. In April 2025, police found Megan Bos’s body buried in the yard of Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, described as a criminal illegal alien from Mexico. After being charged with the crime, Mendoza-Gonzalez was granted pre-trial release until ICE arrested him.

Miller also highlighted Operation Midway Blitz, which he said has removed dangerous individuals from Chicago’s streets. Among those arrested were Marcelino Ramos Crus, Bernardino Perez-Arrevillaga—who is a registered sex offender—and Juan Armenta.

The statement criticized Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson for their approach to law enforcement. It quoted Pritzker as saying in March 2025: “What we really need is to become street fighters.” The statement also referenced comments from April 2025: “Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption — but I am now.” In September 2025, Mayor Johnson referred to law enforcement as a “sickness.”

Miller said protests at the Broadview ICE facility had escalated beyond peaceful demonstrations. According to him, protestors made violent threats including calls to “shoot ICE,” with law enforcement recovering firearms and an explosive device at one incident.

He concluded: “The people of Illinois deserve better than leaders who side with criminals over communities. Every family should feel safe knowing the law will be enforced and violent offenders will be held accountable. It’s time to end the reckless sanctuary policies that are endangering our neighborhoods and stand with law enforcement in their mission to protect innocent lives. If Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson won’t take that responsibility seriously, then the federal government must step up and help.”

Chris Miller was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 101st House District in 2023, succeeding Reggie Phillips.
