The Coles County Jail has been found compliant with all Illinois County Jail Standards for the third consecutive year, following its latest annual inspection by the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). The inspection process included a review of the facility, as well as an evaluation of policies, practices, and training requirements.
Since last year's report, the Coles County Sheriff’s Office has implemented several improvements. These include purchasing new mattresses, adding a padded cell, contracting for more mental health counseling hours for inmates, and providing a laptop for pro se inmates to view discovery materials. The jail has also upgraded its personal observation check system to Guardian RFID, moved to an electronic medical records system, improved Homewav kiosks, and installed additional tablets in living areas. Construction is underway on a medical observation unit that is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The IDOC made several recommendations during this inspection. These include issuing undergarments instead of disposable garments at intake, laundering undergarments purchased from the commissary, removing two beds from one dormitory, adding a shower to another dormitory, and removing graffiti from some walls. The sheriff’s office stated it intends to comply with these recommendations.
"I am honored to announce that the Coles County Jail has recently completed the annual inspection process through the Illinois Department of Corrections, and our facility has been declared compliant with all aspects of Illinois County Jail Standards for the third consecutive year. These inspections are very thorough, as the IDOC inspector not only examines the facility itself but also reviews our polices, practices, and training requirements."
"I am incredibly proud of the commitment and dedication of the entire CCSO staff. Three consecutive years with no findings of non-compliance is a great accomplishment. Every member has played a part in making this successful inspection possible, and I appreciate their efforts. We will continue to work hard to keep our facility safe, clean, and secure," said Kent Martin, Sheriff.
