A trip to Wisconsin turned into a challenging experience for Mattoon resident Marcia Parker when she fell and severely injured her rotator cuff. Despite the setback, Parker made a full recovery within three months, thanks to the efforts of the orthopedics and rehabilitation teams at Sarah Bush Lincoln.

After seeking emergency care in Wisconsin on the night of her accident, Parker realized something was amiss despite no broken bones. "Nothing was broken, but I knew something was wrong," she recalled. Determined to address her injury back home in Mattoon, she contacted SBL Orthopedics and Sports Medicine while returning with her husband Steve.

Having previously undergone hip replacement surgery with SBL Orthopedic Surgeon Eric Brewer, DO, Parker sought his expertise once more. With assistance from Certified Medical Assistant Emily Parker, she secured an appointment with Quinn Camfield, PA-C. "I’ve always thought highly of Dr. Brewer," said Marcia Parker about her shoulder replacement experience.

The severity of Parker's rotator cuff tear necessitated a reverse shoulder replacement performed by Dr. Brewer. This procedure involves placing the ball on the socket side of the joint instead of attaching it to the upper part of the humerus as in standard replacements.

Following surgery, physical therapy became essential for regaining range of motion in her left arm. Everyday tasks like reaching for dishes or styling hair proved difficult due to limited mobility.

Three weeks post-surgery marked the beginning of physical therapy under SBL Rehabilitation Services Director Sarah Hopkins' evaluation and guidance from Physical Therapist Assistant Jennifer Nave. Through targeted exercises such as lifting light weights and cones over three months' time span—Parker gradually regained strength—and flexibility—in her arm muscles—which allowed resumption—of daily activities previously hindered by injury-related constraints.

Reflecting on this period—she expressed gratitude towards those involved: “Everything they had me do was very beneficial...they were very kind...very professional—and attentive—to my needs.” Today—Marcia can perform simple yet crucial tasks without difficulty—a relief after enduring limitations throughout summer months earlier last year; feeling normalcy again brings comfort amidst overcoming adversity faced during recovery journey embarked upon following unexpected fall incident initially encountered back then at outset thereof originally encountered therein thereof thereby leading thereto thereafter eventually culminating ultimately resulting finally concluding successfully achieved outcome reached attained accomplished realized fulfilled obtained secured gained won
