With recent interest in federal government payments to POLITICO subscriptions, attention has turned towards the State of Illinois's expenditure on similar services. A search of the Open The Books database reveals that Illinois taxpayers have funded subscriptions totaling $102,673.27 to Capitol Fax and POLITICO during 2022 and 2023.

There is no information available yet for the year 2024.

The article's author emphasizes that they do not criticize any news agency or individual for earning a living through these means. However, they express concern over state and local governments spending taxpayer money on such subscriptions, questioning the lack of statutory support for these expenditures.

"Once again, we do not fault any news agency or blogger, or anyone else for making a living," the statement reads. "But we do fault state and local governments for spending tax money on these types of subscriptions as there does not appear to be any statute providing our state government to spend money in this fashion."
