State Representative Adam Niemerg recently hosted a town hall meeting to address the issue of deer overpopulation in Illinois, which has been causing significant damage to crops. The event, co-hosted by the Jasper County Farm Bureau and the Clark County Farm Bureau, provided a platform for farmers and hunters to discuss potential solutions. Representatives from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) were present to update attendees on the current deer hunting program and gather local input.
"This deer nuisance isn’t just when these animals jump out in front of vehicles along the roads or highways but is also a continual and growing problem for the farmers in our area and around the state," said Rep. Niemerg. Suggestions from participants included extending deer hunting seasons, increasing permit allocations for counties, and improving data reporting on deer-vehicle accidents to better determine permit numbers.
One proposed solution involves applying for Deer Removal Permits (DRP), which allow up to 10 deer to be taken by two designated individuals over 30 days. Rep. Niemerg is actively promoting this option and offers assistance with applications through his office.
"Thank you to the Farm Bureau and the IDNR for the opportunity to have good conversation with our local farmers," added Niemerg. He emphasized his collaboration with local stakeholders on legislative measures aimed at mitigating crop losses due to deer damage.
