Shelby County Board member Austin Prichard recently faced scrutiny over a conflict of interest concerning his dual roles. Prichard, who is also the Commander of the Shelby County Dive Team, had several items on the agenda for purchase approval related to the team.

Concerns were raised in a previous article about Prichard's simultaneous positions and potential conflicts of interest. During a recent board meeting, Prichard did not cast a vote as required by law.

According to 55 ILCS 5/2-1005, "the yeas and nays shall be taken upon the question of the passage of any other ordinance, resolution, or motion at the request of any county board member and shall be recorded in the minutes." Instead of voting 'yea' or 'nay,' Prichard chose to vote 'present.' This action suggests he acknowledges the conflict inherent in his roles.

Legal counsel Ruth Woolery remained silent during this procedural breach. The absence of a definitive vote from Prichard means constituents in his district may not have had proper representation on matters before the board.

Further developments on this issue are expected.
