A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Casey, Illinois, regarding residential and commercial building permits on October 30, 2024. The request was made by us at East Central Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The records requested under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140, include a list of all new residential and commercial building permits issued from January 1, 2023, until the present date. The specific fields requested for each permit are the type of permit, date issued, fee paid, requester's name, address of the property in question, and contractor's name.
In addition to this information about newly issued permits, we also requested details about all active residential and commercial building permits. The same fields were asked for these active permits along with their current status.
As members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We believe that as media professionals engaged in disseminating information to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver for this request.
