FOIA Request to City of Charleston Regarding Building Permits on October 30, 2024.
In a bid to ensure transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, we at East Central Reporter have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the City of Charleston. The request, sent on October 30, 2024, seeks access to specific records related to residential and commercial building permits issued within the city.
The records requested include a list of all new residential and commercial building permits issued from January 1, 2023 till the present date. We have asked for specific fields in these records including the type of permit, date issued, fee paid, requester's name, address and contractor's name.
Additionally, we have also requested for a list of all active residential and commercial building permits along with their current status. The same specific fields as mentioned above are required for these active permits as well.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe that access to such public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we have also requested for a fee waiver as a media professional.
We await response from the City of Charleston regarding this FOIA request.
