Chicago and Illinois have long been known for their progressive governance. However, they are now dealing with the consequences of their political decisions. While leaders highlight achievements such as higher minimum wages, green energy policies, and making the state an abortion haven, issues like economic stagnation, crime, and high taxes persist. These problems are causing many residents to leave the state.

Illinois is one of only three states that saw its population decline in the last decade. Since 2020 alone, more than 240,000 residents have left. Over 1.5 million people have moved out since 2000. In 2022 alone, Illinois lost $9.8 billion in adjusted gross income due to out-migration. This loss of population has led to fewer jobs and less income tax revenue.

Businesses are also affected by this exodus. Illinois has created zero net new employment over the last five years and ranks among the worst in the nation for job growth. The state's unemployment rate stands at 5.3%, with Chicago having a higher rate of 6.2%.

Despite increased spending on education—Chicago Public Schools spend almost $30,000 per student—student outcomes are declining. Only 35% of Illinois students can read at grade level, and just 27% are proficient in math.

For the twelfth consecutive year, Chicago leads the nation in homicides. Politicians claim violent crime is decreasing; however, robberies, assaults, and shootings continue to rise.

Illinoisans face some of the highest taxes in the nation: highest property taxes, second-highest gas taxes, and steep corporate income tax rates. Property tax bills in some Chicago suburbs have increased by up to 122%. Meanwhile, Illinois' pension shortfall has grown to $142 billion.

The state's focus on renewable energy projects has caused electricity prices to surge while many initiatives remain stalled due to lack of grid infrastructure.

Governor Pritzker describes Illinois as "the most progressive state in the nation." However, many residents question this label's cost as families leave the state due to high taxes and failing schools.
