With property tax installment deadlines approaching across the 101st district, State Representative Chris Miller (R-Hindsboro) has criticized the Supermajority Democrats in Springfield for recent tax shifts, hikes, and mandates that are expected to increase property taxes in Illinois communities.

“The radical Democrats keep squeezing taxes from hard-working families in Illinois to cover the rising costs of illegal immigrants,” said Rep. Miller. “We have blatant lies fed to us by Pritzker and Democrats about how state funds are being used. Unfortunately, the taxpayers have been a piggy bank for Pritzker, and he just can’t keep his hands out of their hard-earned money.”

According to a Wallet Hub study released in February 2024, Illinois has the second-highest property tax burden in the country with a statewide 2.23% property tax rate when all 102 counties are combined.

The facts indicate that Illinoisans face one of the highest overall tax burdens largely due to high property tax rates. Despite this, as families struggle financially, the majority party has not addressed these high taxes but instead focuses on adding social programs while failing to properly fund education and local governments as promised in the 1970 Illinois constitution.

Numerous proposals supported by Rep. Miller aim to freeze, suspend, or reduce various taxes throughout this General Assembly. However, Democrats have refused to call these proposals for a vote and instead raised nearly $1 billion in new taxes in the State Budget while shifting additional tax burdens onto local governments at the end of the Spring Session.

Included among Rep. Miller's supported measures are:

- HB3535: Reduces property taxes for low-income senior citizens without affecting their retirement accounts.

- HB4354: Caps annual increases in homeowners' property tax bills to no more than 5%, unless substantial home improvements were made.

- HB4716: Limits assessment changes resulting from reassessment to either 3% of assessed value or change in Consumer Price Index over a year.

“We need to stop spending billions on services for illegal immigrants and put Illinois residents first,” added Rep. Miller. “Homeowners are struggling; they work hard but receive no relief from Democrats who continue hiking taxes. Pritzker is a population denier, and people are fleeing Illinois because of over-taxation.”

Rep. Miller emphasized that immediate property tax relief is necessary as residents demand it now rather than later.
