In the early hours of May 30, 2024, Democratic members of the Illinois General Assembly voted to approve a $53.1 billion spending plan for Fiscal Year 2025. The budget was passed without Republican support and represents an increase of $2.6 billion over the previous year's budget. It includes provisions for pay raises for politicians and allocates $1 billion for non-citizens. Additionally, Democrats voted to implement $1 billion in tax increases to fund the increased spending.

Over the past four years, the Democrat-controlled General Assembly has worked with Governor Pritzker to significantly increase government spending. Since Fiscal Year 2020, state expenditures have grown by more than $13 billion, rising from nearly $40 billion in 2020 to over $53 billion this year.
