National Burn Awareness Week is set to take place from February 4th to February 10th, serving as a crucial opportunity to raise awareness about burn prevention and safety. This year, the focus is on the dangers of flammable liquids, emphasizing that substances like gasoline can ignite at room temperature.
One advocate for burn prevention is Representative Adam Niemerg, who is urging the public to join him in supporting the cause alongside the American Burn Association. Rep. Niemerg highlights the urgent need for further efforts in burn prevention, as burn injuries continue to be a leading cause of accidental death and injury across the nation.
Tragically, certain groups are particularly vulnerable to burn injuries. "Children, the elderly, and the disabled are especially vulnerable to burn injuries," says Rep. Niemerg. Shockingly, nearly one-third of all burn injuries occur among children under the age of 15, with children under five being twice as likely to seek treatment for burn injuries in hospital emergency rooms.
The primary causes of burn injuries encompass a range of hazards, including fire-flame, scalds, contact with hot objects, and exposure to electrical and chemical substances. What is especially concerning is that most of these injuries occur within the safety of one's own home.
While it is reassuring that the survival rate for burn injuries is currently at 96.8%, it is unfortunate that many survivors are left with lasting physical and emotional scars. "Many of those survivors will sustain serious scarring, life-long physical disabilities, and adjustment difficulties," warns Rep. Niemerg.
