Shelby County Sheriff Brian McReynolds was involved in a civil rights lawsuit filed by Chad Hammond in March 2023. The lawsuit alleged that Hammond did not receive necessary medical attention while detained at the county jail, leading to an abdominal infection.

In October 2024, Hammond moved to dismiss the Sheriff from the complaint. However, this motion did not include Monica Duran and Cathy Stephans, identified as the Doctor and Nurse responsible for providing medical care at the jail.

By February 2025, a joint stipulation motion led to Duran and Stephans being dismissed from the case. Instead, USA Medical and Psychological Staffing were named as defendants. Previously, Advanced Correctional Health Care (ACH), initially named in the complaint, was dismissed on January 25th, 2024. ACH had also settled another case with former inmate Nicholas Banning.

On April 15th, 2025, a stipulation resulted in all causes of action against USA Medical & Psychological Staffing being dismissed with prejudice. The following day, a text order confirmed the case's dismissal with prejudice.

Details on how these actions were satisfied remain unspecified but are typically indicative of a settlement. USA Medical & Psychological Staffing did not file any motions to exit the case before settling.

The settlement of Nicholas Banning's case occurred shortly before Hammond's resolution on April 11th, 2025. This timing raises questions about whether these medical providers chose to settle rather than contest further legal proceedings.

Despite these developments, Shelby County continues using ACH for its medical services.
