A new hike and bike trail has been opened at Fox Ridge State Park, providing an exciting opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts in the region. The trail, called the Embarras River Trail, stretches nearly one mile and connects parking lot No. 6 on East County Road 380 North to the park. This development is part of a long-term effort to connect the park to the city of Charleston in east-central Illinois.

Natalie Phelps Finnie, director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, expressed her enthusiasm for the trail, stating, "This wonderful new hiking and biking trail among the natural beauty of Fox Ridge State Park is sure to be a draw for area families and visitors. IDNR is thrilled to provide this outdoor opportunity and looks forward to continued efforts to build a physical connection between the park and the Charleston community."

The project, funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration's Recreational Trail Program, cost $379,880. The funding provided an 80% federal match to state funding. The work involved resurfacing an existing trailhead, replacing culverts, and installing interpretive signage and traffic control measures within the Embarras River Nature Preserve.

Charleston Mayor Brandon Combs expressed his support for the project, stating, "We are thrilled to see the progress at Fox Ridge State Park. Fox Ridge is an incredible asset to the City of Charleston, and their success is our success."

Fox Ridge State Park, spanning over 2,000 acres, is known for its picturesque landscapes, including steep, thickly wooded ridges, lush valleys, and rugged hiking trails. Visitors to the park can engage in a variety of activities such as hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, and picnicking.

State Rep. Adam Niemerg, whose district includes Fox Ridge State Park, highlighted the economic benefits of the new trail, stating, "I appreciate projects that will help in the economic development of our region, and this promotes tourism for our area. With Eastern Illinois University and the Charleston community nearby, I can foresee an expanding opportunity to promote outdoor activities with this trail for hiking and biking and connecting to Fox Ridge State Park."

State Rep. Chris Miller of Hindsboro also expressed his excitement about the trail, stating, "This new bike/hike trail is a welcome addition to Fox Ridge State Park. People all across the country are always on the lookout for new trails, and this is certainly one that will be added to their list. The Embarras River bike/hike trail will not only improve our local economy, but it will also provide new opportunities for local residents to enjoy the outdoors."

With the opening of the Embarras River Trail, Fox Ridge State Park is poised to become an even more popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and visitors from near and far. The trail's connection to the Charleston community and its potential for economic development make it an exciting addition to the region.
