ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS

Principal PK-8 Report – Morgan Wilhoit

• Our learning fair was a hit. We had 16 teachers on just the elementary and junior high side (only 4 did not attend). Lunch and snacks were provided and everyone seemed to really enjoy the time spent learning more about what we can do for our students.

• School Improvement and Institute were also great this year. Thank you to Joni who provided breakfast on Tuesday.

• Open house was great! Thanks to Teresa for making cookies. We had about 75% attendance in PK-8!

• The first day of school elementary and junior high will do stations to go over expectations for the school year. We will visit each of the locations around the building and do bus drills and expectations. Students will be given a little punch-card ticket this year. When they follow expectations, they can get a sticker/hole punch. Then, they will come see me when their card is full for a prize and a new card to start over.

• The Student of the Week schedule has been sent out to teachers. There will be two students chosen every week and their picture will be on the bulletin board from Monday-Monday each week.

• Grandparents Day (Lunch on the Lawn) will be September 8th. A form will be sent out on Friday.

• I am sending out a new form for food bags on Fridays for families to sign up.

• Talk of a journalism club - working with Newman Independent and Prairie Press. We would need a position (or two) open for a journalism sponsor.

• We will have paraprofessional training on August 30 and September 6 on our 2:05 dismissal days.

• All drill dates have been set for the year.

• Parent Advisory Meeting will be September 18th at 4:30 in the library.

Notes from Mrs. Evans-

The last week of June, I attended Project Ice at Oregon State University. It was a pilot of the program and is put on by the American Meteorological Society. The other sponsor is COLDEX(Center for Oldest Ice Exploration). There were 11 educators from across the country chosen to participate. We learned about Antarctic ice and why it is important. Here are some highlights:

• Collaborated with like minded educators and created lessons to be used in our classrooms

• Visited the COLDEX facility and toured the space where cores are housed (soil at room temperature, soil at 37 degrees, and ice at -20 degrees!)

• Visited with a panel of graduate students studying ice (9 lovely and VERY smart ladies)

• Learned from a professor that is the head of the graduate program

• Learned from other experts in the field. The Director of Education at COLDEX is a Volcanologist!

• And had some fun along the way!

We also have to do a peer presentation which I will likely do at a conference in the coming school year.

AMS projects (Ocean, Atmosphere and now Ice) are all fully funded for educators. Plus we earn 3 graduate hours. It is a competitive application process. In 2021 I attended Project Atmosphere online due to COVID. I am looking forward to sharing what I have learned with my students.

Climate Action Action School Report

We had a great first year with Climate Action Schools. As the lead educator, I participated in training activities and monthly meetings before school throughout the year.

Our first student activity in November was to learn about Keystone Species and come up with the species that would signify our school. We chose the Shagbark Hickory. We presented this during our Virtual Handshake with our partner school in Mumbai, India in late January. In February, several students attended the IDEA national conference in Schaumburg. They participated in an interactive student panel on ways to use tech to take action across the curriculum with STEM and global issues. They were able to share their hopes for the future and big ideas for teaching and learning! They also had a booth where they displayed their research posters and talked to people in the exhibit hall.

We were paired with 3 schools: Washington DC, Pakistan and India. Unfortunately, we did not have any interaction with the school in DC and just a little interaction with the school in Pakistan. We did form a great relationship with the school in Mumbai, India. We had 2 Zoom calls with them, one we talked about our Keystone Species and the other was to talk about our community. We went a step further and invited students to write letters to penpals. There were 26 students that participated. I have sent return letters to the students, so we should be hearing back from them this fall.

In May, a group of 8th grade students went to the State Capital with their information on “Rural Recycling?” They were very well prepared, but our representatives did not show up to talk to the students. They were able to speak to one representative. IDEA leaders were very interested in what they had to say and would like to follow their story and possibly have them present at IDEAcon in February 2024. IDEA puts on Students for Innovation: Advocacy Day each May at the State Capital.

I am hoping to continue with Climate Action Schools for the 2023-24 school year. I have attached the invoice for the upcoming school year. It is more than last year. I feel this is a very worthwhile program and gives the students a glimpse of the world beyond the walls of their school. They have added a person to their staff who will be looking for additional opportunities for our students and grants to help with that. We are in the planning stages right now.

I would be glad to entertain any questions you might have. I appreciate your support and consideration in these endeavors!
