Arcola Community Unit School District #306 Board of Education met July 12.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

A regular meeting of the Board of Education of Arcola Community Unit District #306 Arcola, Illinois was called to order in the High School Library at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 for the purpose of regular business.

President L. Shonkwiler called the meeting to order. The following members answered roll call: Stout, L. Shonkwiler, Conlin, Myers, and J. Shonkwiler. Board member Leyva-Sanchez was not present.

Others present were: Tom Mulligan, Jennifer Frichtl, and Allyson Wise.

President L. Shonkwiler administered the Oath of Office to newly appointed Board Member Allyson Wise. President L. Shonkwiler recognized the visitors and asked for public comment. There were no comments. Dr. Mulligan reported that he just received a FOIA request for substitute teacher data.

Motion by Stout, seconded by Myers, to approve the regular meeting minutes and closed session minutes from June 14, 2023 and the Special meeting minutes and closed session minutes from June 26, 2023. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Motion by J. Shonkwiler, seconded by Conlin, to approve the Treasurer’s Report as of June 30, 2023 as submitted. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Motion by Stout, seconded by J. Shonkwiler, to approve the payment of bills as submitted in the amount of $234,249.97. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Motion by Myers, seconded by Wise, to approve the payment of payroll in the amount of $426,385.18. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Business:

Motion by Stout, seconded by J. Shonkwiler, to approve the bid from Effingham Equity for fuel and the bid from Prairie Farms for milk for the 2023-2024 school year. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Motion by Wise, seconded by Conlin, to approve the school board calendar for the 2023-2024 school year outlining dates and tentative topics. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Motion by J. Shonkwiler, seconded by Stout, to approve the purchase of appliances for the family consumer sciences room remodel from Home Depot in an amount not to exceed $18,000. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Motion by Myers, seconded by Wise, to approve a one-year agreement with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for math curriculum in the elementary school in the amount of $25,502.90. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Administrative Team Reports

Dr. Mulligan told the board that the administration team has been discussing the possibility of hiring a permanent substitute teacher. It has become increasingly more difficult to secure subs so teachers have been getting pulled to sub during their prep periods more and more. Having a permanent sub would cut down on the need to do this. Dr. Mulligan is still discussing all of the details with the admin team and the attorney.

Motion by Conlin, seconded by J. Shonkwiler, to approve the resignation of Madison Martina as 6th Grade Classroom Teacher. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Motion by Myers, seconded by Stout, to approve the employment of Michelle Barnes as 6th Grade Classroom Teacher. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L. Shonkwiler, aye; Conlin, aye; Myers, aye; J. Shonkwiler, aye; Wise, aye. 6 ayes. 0 nays. Motion carried.

Motion by Myers, seconded by J. Shonkwiler, to approve the destruction of verbatim records older than 18 months and the release of redacted closed session minutes. Roll call vote: Stout, aye; L.
