Yes, it’s that time of year when everything turns into a pumpkin. While Marshall is gearing up for the big fall festival, Autumn Fest, which is only a month away, we will be preparing for fall in the meantime. The excitement is mounting, and we will talk more about the Autumn Fest early next month. But for now, our thoughts begin to turn to those seasonal favorites – Pumpkin Spice and Apple Pie.
Everywhere you turn, you will soon be seeing the fall colors, the pumpkin patches, and the apple trees bearing the fruit we all love to crunch into and bake with. Coffee lovers, particularly those who love sweet flavors in their coffee, are ready to succumb to the pumpkin spice latte. Don’t deny it. The commercials are getting to you, and you will soon seek your pumpkin fix. Sure, you can travel out of town and over to Terre Haute to a Dunkin or Starbucks for that corporate coffee experience, but why not head to one of Marshall’s own local spots for seasonal coffees and sweet treats instead?
You can get your coffee fix and much more at Latte Dough Coffee Shop and Bakery Cafe at 1206 Archer Avenue. They have all kinds of syrups for their lattes, cappuccinos, hot chocolates, and more, including Vanilla, Butterscotch, Caramel, Cinnamon, Gingerbread, Hazelnut, Maple Spice, and of course – Pumpkin Pie and Pumpkin Spice. Get a slice of apple pie, a cinnamon roll, or their signature cinnamon roll bread pudding. All the flavors of fall await you. Check out the whole menu online at https://lattedough.com/.
Think Healthy
On a healthier note, did you know that fall fruits and vegetables are a great healthy choice to add to your diet? They are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients and vitamins that strengthen your immune system and prepare you for the cold weather ahead, and they are also cheaper.
The best part of eating fall fruits and veggies is that they are locally grown, so you can get them fresh from the farms. Apples, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and butternut squash are fantastic for your health. An apple a day may not keep the doctor away, but it is a great healthy snack and a much better choice than chips or candy in the lunch box or for an after-school treat. Buying locally sourced fruits and vegetables is good for the local economy too. Support your local growers and farm stands.
Pumpkin, sweet potato, and butternut squash can make great bases for hot soups. They are a great addition to any menu as side dishes. And, of course, there are pies. Maybe not as healthy a choice, but what’s better than a slice of hot apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a cold piece of pumpkin or sweet potato pie and a big glass of milk?
If you’re looking to buy local produce, don’t forget that there are still a couple of Friday nights to visit the Marshall Farmer’s Market and enjoy the Marshall City band downtown at the bandstand.
Sunflowers!
Get your sunflowers on! Lazy G Sunflowers will be at the Farmer’s Market this Friday night! Sunflowers are at their peak and are absolutely stunning this time of year. If you can’t make it to the Farmer’s Market, check them out one mile north of Marshall at 18499 N Guinnip Road. They are a beautiful site to see and a wonderful way to kick off the fall season of color.
Visit a Pumpkin Farm
For a fun family outing, plan ahead for the September opening of the Southfork Homestead Pumpkin Farm. This old-time farm has a general store on the property and farm animals to check out like chickens, horses, goats, pigs, rabbits, cows, and even a good old barnyard cat.
Activities include wagon rides into hillbilly village on the back 40 woods, a 70 ft bounce pillow for kids of all ages, the fantastic corn maze, pedal cars, and the Mount Everest slide, 150 ft long. There’s a sand pit for the little ones to play in and different photo props around the farm for fun family picture opportunities.
Make sure to get your fall food fix with some apple donuts, kettle corn, and homemade ice cream while you’re there. Wash it all down with cold apple cider too. On weekends at Southfork, you can enjoy a burger at the Outlaw Grill Saloon. Their burgers are made from grass-fed beef raised right on the farm. Pulled pork and root beer are also a fan favorite at the Saloon.
Located in Paris, Illinois, at 3000 N. 1200 St., the Southfork Homestead Farm has something for everyone. The opening day is September 20. For more details, hours of operation, admission price, and to learn about how to take a group or organize a field trip to the farm, check out their website at https://www.southforkhomestead.com/
