The days are warmer and longer, the nights are more gentle, and we’re getting ready for the fun of the summer ahead. When we think of June, we think of graduations, family picnics, our final efforts of spring cleaning, and… weddings.
It’s commonly known that June is considered the most popular month for getting married. We believe that the month of June was likely named after the ancient Roman goddess Juno. The first month of the year when we can plan for better weather might account for why so many people get married in June. Also, many people marry right after college or even high school graduation. While those are factors, it also might have to do with the goddess Juno who was considered to be the patroness of marriage and childbirth. Many hopeful couples are donning tuxes and gowns and marching down the aisles of the local churches here in Illinois and all over the country, and we celebrate with them!
Another version of June’s origin story is that the name came from the Latin “juvenis,” meaning “young people.” June was considered a time to celebrate the young. Juno was given the role of the protector of women and children. She was thought to be the goddess who watched over them.
June is a month of great beauty. The flowers are in full bloom, the sun is shining, and things feel new again. It’s a month of final spring cleaning, yard sales, and days of celebration, including the day when summer officially begins.
June 5: World Environment Day. Here are some of the days we celebrate in this lovely month:
- Take time on June 5 to learn more about how you can contribute to efforts to improve the environment. Share this day with the entire world as we commit to caring for the earth.
- June 14: On this day, we celebrate Flag Day. We honor those that served and even died to protect our Flag. Make sure you fly your Flag outside your home or office. Show your love for our country and your pride as an American.
- June 19: This is the Sunday when we celebrate Father’s day. Be sure to honor the fathers in your life. They don’t all have to be your father. Many of us have father figures who are there for us when we need them. Ensure they know how much you appreciate their help, advice, and support.
- June 21: Finally, summer will officially be here. June 21 marks the summer solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere, while in the Southern Hemisphere, winter will begin.
- It’s the day in the year with the most hours of daylight here in Marshall, so make the most of it!
Don’t Miss The Strawberry Moon: The Year’s First Supermoon.
On Tuesday, June 14, the moon will reach its peak illumination at 7:52 A.M. (EDT). But that evening, just after sunset, if you turn your attention to the southeastern sky, you will be able to see the full moon rise above the horizon. It will be large, enormous, and bright, with a fantastic golden hue against the darkening sky.
It’s time for that final Spring -cleaning effort:
Now that the winter is over, we find ourselves wanting to shed the old and bring on the new. The grass is getting long and needs more mowing; the flower beds need more tending, and summer veggies and fruits are reaching their peak for the picking. What’s better than a summer tomato, fresh lettuce, spicy peppers, and cukes from our own backyard garden?
But what about all that stuff we collected all winter long? It’s time to clean out the garage, basement, or attic. There may be things that you want to be rid of, but your junk could be someone else’s treasure. Why not have a yard or garage sale?
Every weekend in June, people will be setting out belongings they no longer want or need. Others will be driving around hunting for those driveways filled with many items from clothes to tools, electronic equipment, books, and any number of unique items for sale. Haggling over the price is part of the game, so leave a little wiggle room in your pricing. If you’re planning a sale, make sure you post signs on the corners where the most traffic passes to let would-be shoppers know how to find you.
