The Effingham County Board passed a resolution Monday declaring the county a sanctuary for gun owners.
The resolution, passed on a 8-1 vote, directs employees not to enforce new Illinois laws that would “unconstitutionally restrict the Second Amendment," according to the Chicago Tribune.
The sole “no” vote came from Karen Luchtefeld, who said it was inappropriate for her to make such a decision for the people who voted for her, according to The State Journal-Register.
Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler told the Effingham Daily News that the action is largely symbolic and would not control decision-making at the sheriff's office.
This resolution stands in opposition to legislation vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner that would have required more registration rules for gun shops.
