Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by President Jack Ingram. Members present included Ben Bland, Steve Layton, Bob Blade, Pam Ross, and Anita Hayden. Others present included Middle School Principal Stacy Keyser, Elementary Principal Daniel Huffman and Todd Butler, Superintendent. Visitors present were Deanna Cox, Mariellen Taylor, Roberta Fritts, Sherry Parker, Shelby Storm, Jordan Shore, Jenna Young, Samantha Webb, Jenna Layton, Tiffany Richter, Monica Carlen, Monica Lee and Gail Nelson.

The Board and guests started the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The President welcomed members of the audience.

President Ingram presented the Above and Beyond Award to Deanna Cox. She has made selfless donations of technology for our students. She has donated a special device for students that aren’t able to verbally communicate. This device has a visual component that interprets eye gaze as a method of communication. This device, when purchased, was worth over $25,000.00. Thank you to Deanna for her generous donation!

President Ingram and the Board reviewed the Consent Agenda items:

It was moved by Steve Layton and seconded by Ben Bland to approve the Consent Agenda A-E. All members voted “Aye.”

Board Report from President Jack Ingram:

A lot of people have been involved with the water line situation that presented itself due to the water line break. There have been a lot of people that have worked together to make sure that graduation and the end of the year events were not interrupted. It was an impressive amount of collaboration that kept things rolling.

Charlie Sappington is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of National Association of Agriculture Educators. He has dedicated a lot of time and talent to our program. As a district, we are very proud of his efforts and career.

High School Board Report submitted by Kevin Maynard:

Congratulations to Ms. McCown, Mrs. Sappington and the members of this year’s scholastic bowl team on their trip to the small school National tournament held in Rosemont.

Congratulations to Cole Willenborg, Cole represented Cumberland High School at the WTWO “Top of the Class” luncheon on May 16.

Upcoming end of the year events for Cumberland High School:

Fine Arts Night = Thursday, May 11th starting at 6:30 in the gym

Scholarship Night = Tuesday, May 16th starting at 6:30 in the cafeteria

Academic Awards = Wednesday, May 17th starting at 1:45 in the gym. The public is invited to attend.

Baccalaureate/Graduation Day = Sunday, May 21st starting at 2:00 in the gym

Final Exam Days will be Thursday, May 25th and Friday, May 26th with dismissal at 2:10 on both days

School Improvement Day/Students Final Day of school will be Tuesday, May 30th with dismissal at 12:10

Teacher Institute will be Wednesday, May 31st

I would like to say thank you to a community member, this individual made a personal donation to an individual student at the high school to help with some personal issues the student was facing.

The math team participated in an event held at the U of I on Saturday, May 6th. Drew Warner placed 35th out of 205 individuals in Pre-Calculus and the two person team of Drew Warner and Olivia Franklin finished in 11th place.

I want to thank the donors and presenters for the Scholarship Awards program and Sandy Miller for all her work in organizing the event. Over $714,500 in scholarship money was received by Cumberland High School seniors.

Congratulations to Mr. Owen, Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Boger, Mr. Ozier and all the fine art students for the wonderful display of talents at this year’s fine arts event on May 11th.

I want to thank and congratulate the high school student council for the fine academic awards program held on Wednesday, May 17th and also congratulations to all the award winners at this year’s program. Congratulations to Mrs. Diann Bomer on being selected as this year’s teacher of the year

The boys baseball team beat Martinsville in the first round of Regional play and are now scheduled to play Oblong at Oblong on May 18th.

The girls softball team won its first game in the Regional against Dieterich and will now play in the Championship game vs. Neoga on May 18th.

The student council attended the Illinois Association of Student Councils annual convention in Lombard May 4-6. Thirteen delegates and advisors Mrs. Janet Blade and Mrs. Sheila Plummer participated in the general session, discussion groups and seminars. Megan Walsh successfully completed her term as first Vice President of the IASC. She is to be commended on her leadership and dedication to the student council.

Extracurricular

Cumberland hosted the LOVC conference track meet on Monday, May 8th. The girls finished in first place with the boys also finishing in first place.Girl’s Sectional track meet will be in Newton on Thursday, May 11th. With the boys to be held in Altamont on Thursday, May 25th.

Congratulations to the coaches and players of this season’s softball team. Cumberland captured the championship of the southeast division conference. Cumberland will host the softball Regional on Tuesday, May 16th with game times at 4:30 and 6:30 and the championship game will be held on Saturday, May 20th at 11:00

The baseball team will host the first game of the baseball Regional vs. Martinsville on Monday, May 15th at 4:30 with the remaining games to be played in Oblong.

Congratulations to Myles Gerhardt, Ryan Yaw, Cole Willenborg and Dillon Howard. These young men set new school records for boys track in the 4 x 200 meter relay and the 4 x 400 meter relay on May 10th at a meet in Charleston.

Middle School Board Report submitted by Stacy Keyser:

The Cumberland Middle School math team of Mrs. Martin, Mr. Jones, Mr. Princko, Mr. Walk, Ms. Booth and Mrs. Keyser (administrator) presented at the ROE 11 offices on Tuesday, May 6 about Eureka Math and their experiences with it over the past couple of years. This was a professional development opportunity for individuals in our region and the team did an outstanding job in this round table discussion and presentation setting.

Mr. Walk, eighth grade science and math teacher, recently had an article published in a math educator magazine. You will find a copy of that article on the board table in front of you. Congrats to Mr. Walk on this honor and recognition!

Athletics and Extracurriculars:

Track: We have several athletes attending the IESA state track meet on May 12 and 13 at Peoria. Girls: Katelyn Yaw will participate in pole vault. Jasmyn Dittamore will participate in the mile and 800 meter run. Ivy Ayers will compete in the high jump.

Boys: Galen Martinez advanced in the 100, 200 and long jump. Logan Thilker will participate in the 110 hurdles. Iysten Syfert will run the mile. The 4 x 100 team of Galen Martinez, Wiley Peters, Logan Thilker, Francis Stout and Iysten Syfert will compete. The 4 x 400 team of Jared Carl, Iysten Syfert, Logan Thilker, Wiley Peters and Francis Stout will also run. Wyatt Brant and Brayson Shew qualified for the state meet in the long jump. Brayson Shew also advanced in the 100 meter dash. Rayce Zike qualified in the 800 and 1600 meter run, while Memphis Waggoner advanced in the high jump. The 4 x 100 team of Memphis Waggoner, Wyatt Brant, Evan Hayden, Brayson Shew, and Ian Sutherland qualified, as did the 4 x 400 team of Wyatt Brant, Rayce Zike, Ross Hemmen, Memphis Waggoner, and Robbie Malone. Galen Martinez broke the 100 meter dash by running 12.2 seconds. He also tied the 200 meter dash record by running 26 seconds. Brayson Shew broke the 100 meter dash record by running an 11.8 and Logan Thilker broke the hurdle record by running a 17.6. Congratulations to all of our track athletes!

State Track Meet Update: Girls Track: Ivy Ayers participated in the high jump. Jasmyn Dittamore placed 4th in the mile, breaking the school record with a run of 5:33. Katelyn Yaw placed 4th in pole vault, she also broke the school record this year with a jump of 8’5”. Jasmyn Dittamore placed 9th in the 800 meter run and broke the school record with a time of 2:31.37.

Boys Track: In 7th grade, Logan Thilker finished 18th overall in the hurdles. Galen Martinez finished 19th in the 200 meter dash, 12th in the long jump and received a medal by finishing 6th overall in the 100 meter dash. Iysten Syfert also ran the mile where he finished 32nd. The 4 x 100 team of Logan Thilker, Francis Stout, Wiley Peters, Galen Martinez and Iysten Syfert also medaled and received 5th overall and broke the school record of 52.66 by running a 51.9. The 4 x 400 relay team of Logan Thilker, Wiley Peters, Jared Carl, Iysten Syfert and Francis Stout ran their best time of the season and finished 22nd. For the 8th graders, Rayce Zike finished 11th in the mile and 19th in 800. Brayson Shew finished 41st in the 100 meter dash and 15th in the long jump, while Wyatt Brant medaled and finished 4th overall in the long jump. Memphis Waggoner finished 2nd overall in the high jump with a jump of 5’8”, which was good enough to break his previous record of 5’6”. The 8th grade 4 x 100 relay team finished 4th overall while also breaking the school record by running a time of 49.5. The 4 x 100 relay team is made up of Memphis Waggoner, Wyatt Brant, Evan Hayden, Brayson Shew and Ian Sutherland. The 4 x 400 team of Memphis Waggoner, Wyatt Brant, Ross Hemmen, Rayce zike and Robby Malone also ran their best time of the season and finished 12th overall. The 8th grade also finished 7th overall as a team. A big congratulations goes out to all of these athletes for their accomplishments!

Scholastic Bowl: Our scholastic bowl team finished the season in first place in the LEIC conference, second in the LEIC tournament, and ended their season by defeating Mattoon in the first match of regionals, but losing to a tough Charleston team in the second match. They had a great season!

Music: The band and choir will present their annual spring concert on Tuesday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the new gym. Thanks to Mr. Ozier and Mrs. Boger and all of the musicians for their time, talent and dedication to a wonderful concert!

Drama: Next year’s musical will be Music Man, Junior. Mrs. Keyser has secured the rights and the costumer for 2018 and planning has begun.

Volleyball and Boys Basketball: Summer camp forms have been sent home with students.

Mrs. Keyser has coordinated some professional development opportunities for the teachers in June and July. One opportunity will be traveling to a Dairy/Creamery in Greenville, IL and going to the old state capitol in Vandalia along with the Little Brick house. The other event will be a look at Cumberland County businesses: Ervin USA, Evapco, Carl’s Pizza, and the First Neighbor Bank. Teachers should be able to take these experiences back into the classrooms with them next year to expose our students to some knowledge gained from these trips.

Thank you to the Cumberland CEA, Cumberland PTO, First Neighbor Bank, Toledo Casey’s, Bob and Alene Blade, and all of the others who have honored our staff with appreciation during our Teacher Appreciation activities. We are blessed with great staff and community support!

Overall, we have had a great year at Cumberland Middle School! I am always thankful for our Raider family. Our staff has gone above and beyond in so many different aspects of the educational setting. Our students have had many successes. Thank you to the parents and guardians who supported the teachers and students to help with all of this! We look forward to continuing to provide your child with every opportunity possible to learn and grow! Have a great summer!

Elementary School Report submitted by Daniel Huffman

On April 25th, Mrs. Nelson’s Preschool classes had a spring sing concert for the parents. They did a great job, the event was well attended!

The 1st grade classes presented the play called Character Matters on May 5th. The students did a great job.

May 8-12th was National Teacher Appreciation week. Many special things were prepared for the teachers and staff. The Cumberland PTO purchased Fillin Station pies, Casey’s General Store in Toledo provided sub sandwich platters, The Cumberland Education Association provided Carl’s Pizza, and Stacy and I provided a Taco lunch. Thank you to Bob and Alene Blade for helping serve the tacos. The First Neighbor Bank sent a drinking glass and pen to all staff members. Thank you to everyone for the acts of appreciation and donations. We are all very appreciative of our hard working and dedicated teachers/staff.

On Tuesday, May 2nd, the Kindergarten classes presented two performances of The Farmer’s Hat play/musical. They did an excellent job!

On May 10th the ½ day institute was a productive afternoon. Kathy Meeker, Dawn Grubb, and Katie Weathers conducted a workshop on Google and Chromebooks. They attended a Google Summit and learned a tremendous amount of information that they shared with the staff. Thank you for your awesome presentation!

May 28th, the 2nd Graders performed the play I Need a Vacation. It takes a lot of practice to memorize all the information to put on a program like this! Awesome job 2nd Graders!

During the months of April and May we have had numerous Special Education IEP meetings. I am very proud of our special education staff and all the effort and professionalism that they put into carrying out the meetings. There is a lot to the entire process, and everyone did a great job! A special thank you goes to Mel Titus, our school psychologist. I appreciate all that you have done for our students and the special education department. Enjoy your retirement!

The annual 2nd Grade Health Fair will be May 17th in the old gym.

Thank you to The Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District and employees Randy Hurt and Judy Meislahn for continuing the tradition of delivering trees to celebrate Arbor Day. On April 28th every 3rd Grader got a Pine Tree to take home. The students enjoyed the presentation and had lots of questions about planting trees.

The PTO Book Fair was a success on May 11th. Thank you to all of the volunteers that help make the event successful. Also, thank you to everyone who purchased books to help raise money for our school.

The Accelerated Reading program will be coming to a close with a limo ride on May 17th. We had 45 students earn a ride this year. It is down some from last year, but the required number of points was raised to make it more challenging. Fourteen students earned a trip to the Dairy Queen for ice cream with the principal, this event replaced lunch with the principal.

Kindergarten registration and screening will be held on May 25 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and May 26 from 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at the Toledo Christian Church. Parents/guardians need to email Sherry Parker at sparker@cumberland.k12.il.us to schedule an appointment.

The last day for Kindergarten will be Thursday, May 25th. The teachers will be conducting screening and registration for the 2017-2018 school year on the last regular school-wide attendance day.

The last day for preschool will be Thursday, May 19th.

The last day for 1st-4th grades will be Wednesday, May 30th. Report cards will be issued that day.

A very special congratulations and thank you goes to Mrs. Monica Lee who is retiring at the end of this school year. She has dedicated many years to our school and to special education. The love that she had for her students was always genuine and indicated in her actions that she had with them. The students and our district have been blessed to have her. She will be greatly missed.

We will end the school year with an institute day on May 31th.

Three teachers, Tiffany Richter and Jake Edwards will be taking jobs in the middle school and Katie Weathers will be taking a job at another district next year. Best wishes to the three of them as they begin their new adventures. I have enjoyed working with you!

Thank you to all of the teachers and staff for another outstanding year. We have accomplished so much. I appreciate how everyone is working together to do great things for our students. I am excited that we have many new things coming together that will make next year even better.

Superintendent Report from Todd Butler:

I want to give a big thank you to the Village of Greenup Board and utility department workers for their quick response and troubleshooting in our water main break situation. They truly made the school a priority. The workers and expense they incurred for the district were very generous. “It’s amazing what they went through for our kids and our staff!” Also thanks to Steve Sherwood and the County Health Department. Steve was able to arrange for a donation of bottled and canned water (over 60,000 bottles and cans) 35,000 bottles of Dasani water was donated Heartland Coca-Cola bottling company and 30,000 cans of water was donated by Donnewald Anheuser Busch. The County Health Department moved quickly in helping me put together information about how to manage a school under a boil order. The staff has done a wonderful job adjusting to the change in routine due to this issue, as well.

A motion was made by Ben Bland to approve The Upchurch Group as the provider of the required Ten-Year Health Life Safety Surveys, in accordance with 23 III. Adm. Part 180, sections 180.310-180.340 for inspections of both attendance centers at a cost of $14,600.00. It was seconded by Pam Ross. All present voted “Aye.”

A motion was made by Anita Hayden and seconded by Steve Layton to move into closed session for the purposes of the discussion of employment, appointment, resignation, evaluation of personnel, matters relating to an individual student, and negotiations at 6:23 p.m. All present voted “Aye.”

The Board entered into open session at 6:59 p.m.

A motion was made by Steve Layton to accept the resignation of elementary teacher Katie Weathers effective at the end of the school year. It was seconded by Ben Bland. All present voted “Aye.”

A motion was made by Anita Hayden to accept the resignation of teacher Angie Boger effective at the end of the school year. It was seconded by Pam Ross. All present voted “Aye.”

A motion was made by Ben Bland to employ Jordan Shore as an elementary teacher. It was seconded by Steve Layton. All present voted “Aye.”

A motion was made by Pam Ross to employ Shelby Storm as an elementary teacher. It was seconded by Steve Layton. All present voted “Aye.”

A motion was made by Anita Hayden to employ Jenna Layton as an elementary teacher. It was seconded by Ben Bland. All present voted “Aye.”

A motion was made by Steve Layton to post job openings for HS head and assistant baseball coaches, HS head and assistant softball coaches, HS assistant wrestling and MS assistant volleyball coach. It was seconded by Ben Bland. All present voted “Aye.”

A motion was made by Anita Hayden and seconded by Bob Blade to post the position of a K-12 Vocal/General Music instructor.

Steve Layton made the motion to adjourn with Ben Bland seconding to the motion. The meeting adjourned at 7:04 p.m.
