Runners can reserve places for 'Races for all Paces'

Running

It might be a good idea to hurry to reserve a spot in Sarah Bush Lincoln's 11th annual 'Races for all Paces' event, but after that, there's no need to rush.

The May 13 event at Eastern Illinois University will offer many types of races, including a half-marathon, 10K and 5K, but also various run/walk events, kids' races and even a "toddler trot."

“Our goal is to get more people involved and moving in a healthy direction,” race director Laura Bollan said. “We purposefully developed multiple race events to include as many people as possible.”

Several doctors are participating in the “Walk with a Doc” event, including Bernie Ranchero, Joan Alvarado, Lyndsay Chevalier and Tom Dust, who invite others to join them in the 1-mile run/walk or the 5K.

At the same time, Army veteran Blake Leitch is asking veterans to participate as a means of honoring soldiers and improving physical activity at the same time.

“Last year, several area residents who had never participated in an event like this joined Dr. Ranchero in the walk," Bollan said. "There were older people on walkers and canes, an amputee, a young boy with leg braces and a walker, and they all accomplished their goals to finish strong. It was heart-warming to witness their determination and zest for life."

Bollan said a veteran injured in the line of duty also ran the half-marathon in combat boots while carrying the American flag.

Participants are encouraged to register early to guarantee they receive a shirt in an appropriate size, but registration is also available during the day of the event. Water and other drinks will be provided at different spots along the runs.

All races start and end at O’Brien Stadium.
