Heather Kirkeng, a float pool nurse at the Sarah Bush Lincoln health center, doesn't necessarily stop working when her shift is over.
One of her patient's recently nominated Kirkeng for the DAISY Award for her dedication and care, which included taking the time to learn about the patient's rare form of cancer.
"She had not heard of it and immediately looked up the necessary information," the patient told Sarah Bush Lincoln in her nomination. "She wanted to learn more about it. Every time she came into my room, she was so kind and friendly."
DAISY in an acronym for Diseases that Attack the Immune SYstem. Sarah Bush Lincoln is among more than 2,400 DAISY Award hospital and health care partners.
For winning the award, Kirkeng received a certificate, a pin and a carved stone sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch" during a recent awards ceremony.
A nurse is selected every month by a committee to receive the honor. Nomination forms are available at sarahbush.org and Sarah Bush facilities.
