Casey-Westfield Board of Education hires lunchroom staff

The Casey-Westfield Board of Education met Oct. 7 to hire new elementary lunchroom staff.

Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the board:

The Casey-Westfield Board of Education met in regular session at 7:00 P.M. on Monday, October 17, 2016 at the Unit Office, 502 E Delaware, Casey, IL. Upon roll call, members present were Cox, Dougherty, Gelb, Howe, Hutton, Overbeck and Tutewiler. Administrators present were Linda Campbell, Melissa Meiners, Chris Seaton and Dee Scott.

President Dougherty recognized visitors Krista McLaren, Jennifer Harris, Ronda Smiley and Jeanne Unzicker.

2015-2016 Audit Presentation by Kemper CPA Group, Robinson, IL. Krista McLaren thanked the district for a smooth audit. She noted they have issued a clean opinion. There were no findings in compliance over the major programs. The district’s financial profile score improved from a 2.90 to a 3.25.

Act upon approval of consent agenda items:

A. Minutes of the regular meeting of September 19, 2016.

B. Minutes of the closed session meetings of April 27, 2015; and destruction of the verbatim record of those meetings as authorized by Board Policy 220 and 220-E1.

C. Financial and budgetary reports and current invoices for payment.

D. Fundraiser lists.

E. 2015-2016 Audit Report

F. Statement of Completion for Health and Safety Survey Amendment #20 for Casey-Westfield High School

Motion by Cox and seconded by Gelb. Upon roll call, members voting yea were Cox, Dougherty, Gelb, Howe, Hutton, Overbeck and Tutewiler. The President declared the motion carried.

Act upon approval of proposal for asbestos consulting and abatement services on window removal at Turner Arts Hall from Environmental Consultants Inc. for $25,775.

Motion by Hutton and seconded by Howe. Upon roll call, members voting yea were Cox, Dougherty, Gelb, Howe, Hutton, Overbeck and Tutewiler. The President declared the motion carried.

Act upon approval of Resolution to continue the annual Health Life Safety nickel levy to fund fire prevention, safety, energy conservation, disabled accessibility, school security and specified repair purposes.

Motion by Tutewiler and seconded by Hutton. Upon roll call, members voting yea were Cox, Dougherty, Gelb, Howe, Hutton, Overbeck and Tutewiler. The President declared the motion carried.

Board and Administrator Reports

A. Monroe—

6th graders enjoyed a great day in the capital city of Springfield learning more about the history of our state. 5th graders enjoyed wonderful weather as they traveled to the St. Louis zoo. Thank you to PTO for supporting these great traditions and the many parents that served as a chaperone. The students represented CW very well, and received compliments for their respectful behavior.

On October 4th, Monroe held an Ice cream social for families during the PTO book fair night. Families enjoyed an ice cream sundae, art project and stories with an ice cream theme. The kitchen served 233 bowls of ice cream!!! Wow! We may have to make this an annual event. Thank you to the many staff that helped make this evening possible and especially to Ronda Smiley and Ashley Spittler who chaired this family event.

The ROE visited Monroe for the annual Health. Life, Safety check. Monroe passed with flying colors. Thank you to all the Monroe staff for keeping current with health and safety codes.

Our School Improvement Day in September was spent with teachers continuing to learn more about the new English Language Arts materials. Teachers have shared wonderful successes as both they and the students learn to dig deeper into reading and writing this year. Thank you so much to all the teachers and the extra hours many of them are putting in each week.

We closed out September with our Jump Rope for Heart celebration. Monroe students were successful in meeting their goal of as they raised $14,525.21 for the American Heart Association to further research and educational programs to fight heart disease and stroke. Thank you to the many families that allowed us to learn about their child’s personal stories. Mr. Currey and Mrs. Leichty continue to promote physical activity and heart health through this program. Top honors for this year include:Top class: Mrs. Smiley’s first grade, Top Grade: First Grade, Top Student overall: Ahriana Bonds, Top students in each grade: Abagale Lowery, Ahrianna Bonds, Carita Hawk-Gentry, Wade Winnett, Trayton Garcia, Dalanee Smith & Riley Gelb. Students celebrated their success by smashing eggs, either hard boiled or raw on the head of either Mr. Currey or Mrs. Meiners. What a fun way to close Monroe’s 6th year of JRfH successes.

Thank you to the Church of Casey for the fantastic treats they brought in for Monroe Staff. How very kind and supportive.

B. Jr/Sr High School—

Academics:

IA Dept: We had two guest speakers this month.

Brooks Hills was the winner of the Beverage Cooler raffle.

Joshua Robertson from the UBC spoke to the classes about the Carpenter's Union and the different crafts under the carpenters umbrella. He answered many questions that the students asked about the program.

Sgt. Swan and Staff Sgt. Hahn spoke to the classes about the opportunities available through the US Army.

Students are progressing on class projects

Blog camper has been re-wired and is partially insulated-she is in the pink!

Fall Craft fundraiser sales are underway.

The Media Center has added about 60 new books with the money given to us by the Illinois State Library Grant Program. We are hoping to add a few more!

Arts:

Art: The Lion's Club of Casey sponsored a poster contest called "A Celebration of Peace". Kennady Drennan won first place and Jimmy Brooks was 1st runner up. Kennady received a cash award of $25 and both received certificates. Kennady's picture will now go to the district competition.

HS Band contest results:

Danville: Outstanding percussion and 1st place

McKendree: 4th place

Newton: Outstanding percussion and 1st place

Robinson: Outstanding drum major and 1st place

JH Band results:

Newton parade: Outstanding drum major and 2nd place

HS Choir Students auditioned for district choir this past weekend and the following students were selected to attend the all-district choir festival at Eastern in November: Rebecca Blanchard, Rebecca Geffs, Rachael Miller, and Dee Stone

Athletics:

BOYS BASKETBALL:

Pre-Season Camp for boys 3-4-5-6 grades is starting on October 16. It will be 2 sessions each afternoon for three consecutive Sundays.the goal of the camp is teach individual basketball skill development and TEAM concepts.the Varsity boys will assist the Coaches

Cross Country: Britney Wright (8th grade) qualified for State as an individual at our Sectional meet on Saturday. The entire girls team ran really well and only missed going to State as a team by 10 points (which in cross country world is extremely close).

Girls Tennis:

After losing our first 6 matches, we finished on a 10 game winning streak. Our final record was 10-6, including beating undefeated Flora. We were the only team to beat Flora all season.

The Golf team completed their season playing the regional at Windsor. No individual golfer advanced to Sectional with sophomore Ashton Rodgers missing by one stroke. The team had a season low 9 hole score of 184 playing the last 9 holes of the regional. The golf team returns 5 of 6 varsity golfers, the five returning will be two juniors and 3 sophomores next year, no seniors.

Volleyball was seeded 3rd in regionals. “Volley for the Cure” will take place next Thursday Oct. 20

Clubs:

Student Council: Homecoming Festivities were a great success! We had 187 students attend the homecoming dance. We ended up with great weather for class games and the parade, which had 55 entries.

FFA: The Casey-Westfield Soils Judging team consisting of Adam Cox, Mackenzie Fouty, Nate Fouty, Kendal Wilson, Avery Smith, Jacob Smith, Noah Gilbert, Johnny Noggle, Anthony Rodgers, Wade Seaton, and Jacob Robinson. We competed well for the contest. Ag Construction is making the horseshoe decorations, if anyone has horseshoes we would gladly use them. 8th Grade Ag is finishing up their toolbox Projects. Horticulture is busy making cuttings in the greenhouse. Ag Mechanics is working on their small engines project. Ag science is working on the Soils Unit. Intro class is working on crops and weeds unit. We have the Meats contest on November 10 and Agronomy November 22. We are starting our Fruit Fundraiser in the Month of November.

Parent Teacher Conferences on October 25th & 27th 3:30 to 7:00 pm

C. District—

1. The JSHS electrical replacement project is scheduled for completion by the end of October. The Roosevelt roof replacement project is scheduled for completion this week. The architect is finalizing plans for the JSHS Gym door replacement work and the Arts Hall window and HVAC replacement work.

2. The district delegate for the delegate assembly at the Triple I conference will be Tracy Gelb. Casey Overbeck and Terri Cox will act as alternates. All board members should review the resolutions prior to the next board meeting and provide feedback for the delegate(s).

Act upon approval to adjourn to closed session under c1 (employment), c6 (sale/lease district property) and c21 (discussion closed meeting minutes) of section 5 ILCS 120/1 et seq. of the Illinois Open Meeting Act at 7:39 p.m.

3. Employ Brittany Kibler as Lunchtime Supervisor at Monroe Elementary for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year.
