The meeting was called to order at 6:01 p.m. by President Jack Ingram. Board members present included Ben Bland, Steve Layton, Kim Starwalt, Bob Blade, Anita Hayden, and Pam Ross, administration Todd Butler, Superintendent; Stacy Keyser, Middle School Principal and Daniel Huffman, Elementary Principal. Visitors present, Sherry Parker. No comment was made about the budget. Steve Layton made the motion to adjourn the budget hearing meeting and Ben Bland seconded the motion. Everyone responded with “aye”. Adjournment was at 6:03 p.m.

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by President Jack Ingram. Board members present included Ben Bland, Steve Layton, Kim Starwalt, Bob Blade, Anita Hayden, and Pam Ross, administration Todd Butler, Superintendent; Stacy Keyser, Middle School Principal and Daniel Huffman, Elementary Principal.
President Ingram welcomed the visitor. Visitor present was Sherry Parker.
President Ingram reviewed the Consent Agenda items:
a. Approval of the regular meeting minutes from August 18, 2016
b. Review financial and budget reports
c. Approve current invoices for payment
d. Approve the substitute list
e. Authorize the posting of administrator and teacher salaries and benefits.
A motion was made by Ben Bland and seconded by Kim Starwalt to approve the Consent Agenda A-E. All members present voted “Aye”.
Mr. Ingram said that he was happy to be in the district today in the grade school and middle school. The new classroom layout is an improvement and it was very impressive. He also spent some time in the lunchroom today. It was a huge coordination of efforts of everyone involved. He was very impressed and commends everyone for their hard work. The flow really works and makes sense. He also experienced the middle school flex classes and enjoyed the hands on approach and different learning opportunities that our students were received. It was great to stand in the middle of the new ideas and efforts that go into that flex time and see the great opportunities offered to our students.
Mr. Ingram updated the board on the camera systems that were installed over the past five years. Their purpose was for student protection, coordination with emergency personnel. There is a little concern with the amount of data that we have due to these video systems. The policy committee has been designated to review policy to establish guidelines for the video surveillance system.
Mr. Ingram provided the board with information that board member Bob Blade provided about recess time and elementary students. Mr. Ingram would like the board curriculum committee to review this topic.
Superintendent report:
Mr. Butler said that the advisory council of teachers appreciates the new lights around the campus, especially in the front circle drive of the high school where it was very dark in the past; also the removal of the overhead power lines is a vast improvement to the campus. Olivia Ross, recent Cumberland graduate, communicated that she was having a great college experience and she contacted Mr. Butler to say “thank you” for the excellent preparation she felt she received from her teachers and staff at Cumberland Schools.
Mr. Butler discussed an annexation/detachment of land request by a family that owns seventy acres in the Cumberland school district, but wants their children to attend Dieterich schools. This property is on the boundary line between the Dieterich and Cumberland school districts. Mr. Butler asked the board for a straw vote on this matter. The final determination on this matter will be decided by the Board of Trustees of ROE 11. The Cumberland Board is in opposition of this detachment.
High School Board Report submitted by Kevin Maynard
Building Report
1. Thank you to all the parents and students that participated in the “meet your teacher event” on August 26th. The High School had an excellent turn out.
2. Thank you to Sarah Bush Lincoln for providing CPR/AED training to the High School staff as part of the September 21st Teacher In-Service.
3. Mid-term of the first quarter occurred on September 22nd.
4. The Junior class will participate in a discussion with Sylvan Learning about the SAT on September 28th and then the class will take the SAT practice exam on Wednesday, October 5th.
5. Homecoming week will be October 3rd through October 8th. The Homecoming football game and fall senior night will be October 7th and the coronation and dance will be October 8th starting at 7:00.
6. No School October 7th for fall Institute Day and then No School October 10th for Columbus Day.
7. High School Picture retakes will be Friday, October 14th.
8. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be Monday, October 17th and Tuesday, October 18th from 4:00 to 6:30. We will have regular school days on these two days.
9. PSAT exam will be given at the High School on October 19th.
10. End of the first quarter will be October 20th and report cards will go out October 27th. Extracurricular Report
1. The football team has started the season with four home games, now the team prepares to travel to Palestine and Oblong before returning home for Homecoming and Senior night on October 7th.
2. Volleyball season is off to a fast start. Cumberland will have the following home matches on September 26th and 29th, October 13th and 19th starting at 6:00
3. Cross Country team has been improving with every meet. The team will be hosting the Cumberland Invite on the campus of Lake Land College on Saturday, October 8th starting at 9:00.
Middle School Board Report submitted by Stacy Keyser
Congrats to our boys baseball team who have broken the record for most wins in a season with a record of 18-3. The boys lost to Teutopolis in the Sectional Championship Game on Saturday, September 24. They were LEIC Conference Champions and Regional Champions!
Thanks to the coaches, players, parents, and community members who supported our girls softball team this fall. The girls ended their season in the first round of regionals this year.
Our cross country team has been competing weekly and several of our runners have achieved personal best times and have placed in the top 25 on multiple occasions. We had nine teams compete in our invitational on August 27 and will host Paris-Mayo in a dual meet next week.
Congrats to the following students on being named to the Eco Team this year: Lindsey Zike, MaKeegan Sparling, Claire Jackson, and Madison Walsh.
We had the pleasure of hearing from former LA Laker basketball player, Adrian Branch, on Wednesday, September 14 in a wonderful assembly. He challenged our students to think about making good choices and emphasized, “They weren’t born winners or losers. They were born choosers!”
Girls basketball has begun this week and seventeen girls from sixth, seventh, and eighth grade are looking forward to their upcoming season.
Band and choir have the following numbers of members this year:
5th/6th grade choir: 51
7th/8th grade choir: 61
6th grade band: 24
7th/8th grade band: 27
5th grade band signups will be on Tuesday, October 4.
Mr. Ozier has been demonstrating the instruments to all 5th grade students and will send paperwork home announcing other details soon.
8. The Quest program has begun their Christmas ornament project. Morgan Scott and Jordan Armes are the presidents of the two companies that will be competing for bragging rights for design and product completion. We are thankful for Stacey Carl and Evapco for their partnership with us on this project.
9. On Friday, September 23, middle school students will rotate to their new Flex group or continue with choir or an RTI learning lab. This time period of the school day has provided our students with some very unique learning opportunities, wonderful dialogue and exploration, and enrichment opportunities to “think outside the box” along with their teachers. Our staff is wonderfully creative and they have really embraced this new portion of the day to help our students excel even more in and out of the classroom.

The school year is off to a great start. The students and staff have adjusted very well to all that a new school year brings. A huge thank you to our wonderful staff that made everything happen without any major difficulties, they are all greatly appreciated.
Thank you to the Modern Woodman Women’s group for donating a goody bag filled with teacher supplies for each staff member. A special thank you to Patty Murray for arranging and delivering the treat for the staff.
Several individuals from the community donated school supplies to help students in need. Thank you so much, your donations helped many have a better start to the school year.
The new lunch schedule has worked out very nicely. As with anything new there were a few “bugs” to work out. I appreciate the cooks, teachers, Susan Ingram, support staff and PTO volunteers who help with the transition process. It took teamwork to make it all come together so nicely.
September 21st will be our first ½ day staff institute of the school year. The staff will learn more about the new evaluation tool, and will have time to work on mandated trainings.
Midterm for the 1st quarter will be on September 22.
The students that did not receive a major office referral so far this year will get to participate in playing PLINKO during the week of September 26th. This is part of the PBIS program. Students that do not have any referrals will get to play BINGO at the end of the quarter.
We had an awesome assembly with Adrian Branch on September 14th. He is a former NBA star, who played for the Lakers. He spoke to the students about make good choices and working hard to achieve goals.
Meet Your Teacher Night went extremely well. We had many compliments about how nice it was to have the gathering the night before school starts opposed to the former Open House Night a week after school started.
We will not have school on October 7th for an institute. Teachers choosing to remain on campus will have time to complete the online mandated trainings. There are some other conferences and workshops in the area that teachers may choose to attend.
We will not have school on October 10th in observance of Columbus Day.
The preschool classes will be taking a fieldtrip to Grissom’s Apple Orchard on September 30th.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on October 17th and 18th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. There will be regular student attendance on both days. As a result there will not be school on October 21st. Parents may make phone calls to arrange a conference starting on October 3rd.
The end of the 1st quarter will be October 20th.
A motion was made by Steve Layton and seconded by Bob Blade to approve the Tentative Budget for FY17. All present voted “Aye.”
A motion was made by Anita Hayden and seconded by Pam Ross to approve the FFA field trip to the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis Indiana on October 19 through October 22, 2016. All present voted “Aye.”
A motion was made by Ben Bland and seconded by Steve Layton to approve the FFA field trip to the 212 Leadership Conference held in Collinsville, Illinois on November 18 and 19, 2016. All present voted “Aye.”
A motion was made by Anita Hayden and seconded by Bob Blade to approve the purchase of a School Treasurer Bond for Erin St. John, District Secretary, through Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America. All present voted “Aye.”
Steve Layton made the motion to employ Emily Ervin as a custodian. It was seconded by Ben Bland. All present voted “Aye.”

There was no closed session.
