Arcola City Council supports food pantry prior to annual race
Pantry provisions and municipal mowing maintenance topped the to-do list for the Arcola City Council at its 7 p.m. meeting on March 7 at City Hall.
All present voted in favor of a $100 cash donation to the Arcola Food Pantry, specifically for its annual “Strides Against Hunger” Event. Every year, Arcola’s Chamber of Commerce publicizes the 5k and one-mile walk/run race, which raises money directly for the Arcola Food Pantry; this year’s is slated for Saturday, April 16.
Beginning on Main Street and taking participants on a range of terrain from brick to other hard surfaces north through a one-mile historic downtown stretch, the race starts at 7:45 a.m. for the mile stint and 8 a.m. for the 5k leg. The annual event offers residents a chance to enjoy exercise and camaraderie, complete with t-shirt giveaways and awards afterwards.
The Food Pantry sponsors a free community breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. on the day of the race at the Arcola United Methodist Church, 121 Locust St. The meal will include pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fruit, donuts, muffins, juice, coffee and milk.
Council members readily approved bills, meeting minutes and reports from February. In additional business, the council authorized ordinances pertaining to water and sewer rates and a lawn-mowing contract for the city. Following alderman reports, Mayor Larry Ferguson reminded the council of electronic recycling day March 12.
