The Illinois Chamber of Commerce said recently it is supporting the Independent Maps campaign to put a legislative redistricting map amendment question on the November ballot.
The Independent Map Amendment movement aims to redraw voting district boundaries within Illinois to allow more options and more balanced options to voters. The petition for redistricting has collected 490,000 signatures to date.
According to the movement's home page, MapAmendment.org, supporters believes that redistricting will draw more candidates for the general assembly and more competition for legislative seats, resulting in more choices for voters. The group also believes that redistricting will protect the voting rights of ethnic and racial minorities. A number of professional and political organizations support the movement.
