State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) voted against House Bill 1312, which aims to restrict federal immigration enforcement in certain locations such as hospitals, courthouses, college campuses, and childcare facilities. The bill was approved by the Illinois House with a vote of 75 to 32 early in the morning and did not receive any Republican support.

In a statement, Niemerg said: “Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) officials have been carrying out their sworn duty in Chicago and other areas of Illinois to locate and apprehend criminals. The State of Illinois cannot pass unconstitutional laws to dictate what the federal government does to uphold federal laws. The majority party made it clear that they would rather support criminals here in Illinois illegally than support the rule of law being carried out by federal personnel who are enforcing immigration law.”

Niemerg is a Republican who began representing Illinois' 102nd House District in 2023 after succeeding Darren Bailey.
