On the night of October 24, 2025, a head-on vehicle collision west of Westfield, Illinois resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens and left two others with life-threatening injuries. The deceased were identified as Michael and Gail Clayton of Charleston. Michael Clayton was a member of the Coles County Board. The names of the injured have not been released.

Channel 3 News reported that Illinois State Police said a van carrying two individuals crossed the center line and struck a truck. The driver of the van was cited for driving under the influence (DUI) and multiple violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code.

It has now been confirmed that both occupants of the van were undocumented immigrants. "It is our understanding the driver will be facing Vehicular Manslaughter charges, among others to include DUI," according to information from Edgar County Watchdogs. "The passenger was detained at the Clark County Jail and later released into the hands of ICE."

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
