An Illinois State University graduate student and teaching assistant was arrested following an incident involving a Turning Point USA student group on campus. Derek Lopez, 27, was seen on video approaching the group's table, which had been set up to promote political comedian Alex Stein's upcoming event. The footage shows Lopez speaking to a man at the table before flipping it over.
"Well, you know, Jesus did it, so you know I gotta do it, right?" Lopez said before overturning the table. As he left the area, he added, "Thanks guys, have a great day."
According to Illinois State University Police, Lopez also allegedly disrupted another informational table hosted by a different student group. He was arrested on Friday and is facing charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. Authorities indicated that the case remains under review and could lead to additional charges or university disciplinary action.
Chris Miller is currently serving as the Republican representative for Illinois’ 101st House District after being elected in 2023. He succeeded Reggie Phillips in this role.
