State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) is hosting his annual free fishing derby for children aged 4 to 15 on Saturday, July 26, 2025. The event will take place at Sam Parr Lake, located just outside of Newton on Route 33. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

"I have had such a positive response to this event that I’m happy to offer this activity again at one of our great fishing locations in the area, Sam Parr Lake," stated Niemerg. "Kids spend so much time these days on their cell phones, playing video games, and indoors watching television, that this provides a chance to get outside, get some fresh air, and learn about the sport of fishing."

Representatives from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will be present to provide presentations on water safety. Local students from Newton and Dieterich High School fishing teams are invited to assist children with baiting hooks and reeling in catches.

"IDNR will have a few fishing poles on hand for kids to use if they do not have one and are learning to fish for the first time," added Niemerg. "This year in addition to raffle prizes, I will be awarding a trophy for the biggest fish caught and for the most fish caught."

Participants should enter Sam Parr State Fish & Wildlife Area from Route 33 and proceed to the White Oak Shelter after taking the second right turn. Signs for the fishing derby will guide attendees.

For further information or inquiries, constituents can contact Rep. Niemerg’s District office at (217) 813-6036 or visit RepNiemerg.com.
