State Representative Chris Miller (R-Hindsboro) has called on Governor JB Pritzker to allow Illinois to participate in the Educational Choice for Children Act. This legislation proposes a private school voucher program available nationwide. As Chief Co-Sponsor of HR0427, Rep. Miller advocates for school choice to ensure quality education for future generations.
“Illinois public school students are struggling to meet proficiency standards and Democrat elected officials refuse to take action to improve student learning,” stated Miller. “Our state killed the only successful school choice program we had and now the Illinois State Superintendent is suggesting lowering proficiency benchmarks to mask the crisis that has been created through poor educational policies.”
The Trump administration enacted this act, which establishes a federal tax-credit scholarship program aimed at providing funds for low-income students across the country. States can voluntarily opt into this program, set to open enrollment in 2027. The scholarships will be funded privately and do not divert funds from public schools, allowing use in private schools or other educational support.
Illinois’ previous School Choice Program ended in 2023, affecting over 15,000 low-income students. Rep. Miller emphasized that Governor Pritzker should endorse this federal program to enhance educational opportunities for these students.
“These kids are our future, and they deserve to receive quality education through a school that embraces their specific style of learning so they can succeed,” said Miller. “My colleagues and I strongly urge Governor Pritzker to give his full support to the Educational Choice for Children Act so students can thrive in an educational environment that is best suited for their needs.”
